Welcome – Kenya Howse – Wilson Elementary School

Hello & Welcome to 4th grade!

It was terrific seeing so many of you at the Ice Cream Social! I am excited to start the new year by getting to know your child. I look forward to seeing you this  Wednesday, August 27th, at 6:45 for Back-to-School Night!

Here are some essential things to know:

  • Students and parents should check the blog every Sunday. It will be posted at 3:00pm.
  • Please make sure your child has headphones/earbuds.
  • Students should bring in a water bottle and a healthy snack each day.
  • Please plan to bring in a small item to share during the week of school (favorite toy, souvenir, award, etc.) Also, please plan on bringing a good book to read from home.

  • IF YOU HAVE A SPECIAL PICTURE IN A FRAME, PLEASE SEND IT IN! YOU WILL GET IT BACK AT THE END OF THE YEAR. I LIKE TO PUT THE PICTURES AROUND THE ROOM. THESE SPECIAL PICTURES HELP GIVE THE CLASSROOM A WARM AND HOMEY FEELING. PICTURES CAN INCLUDE THE STUDENT WITH A FAMILY PET, VACATION, ETC.

Supplie

St. Joseph Public Schools provides students with all necessary supplies, but if you would like to donate the following items, it would be greatly appreciated since we use so many supplies all year. Please send in plain-colored items with no designs. There is no need to write your child's name on the items, as they will be part of a class donation and shared among all students. Different children will likely be using the supplies. Thank you for the supplies that have been donated so far!

Due to a lack of space, items will be stored in a donation cupboard for the school year. So please no

personalized items except for headphones.

  • Earbuds or headphones (these will not be shared:)

  • Box of Kleenex

  • Clorox Wipes

  • Hand Sanitizer

  • #2, Sharpened Pencils (no designs)

  • 2 spiral (1 subject) notebooks (no designs/ solid colors, wide-ruled)

  • thin tip dry erase markers(any colors)

  • highlighters(any colors)

  • glue sticks

  • Ziploc bags

Snacks in the Classroom

Please ensure that everyday snacks are quick and easy for your child to handle. For example, please no yogurt, pudding, uncut fruit, Doritos, Takis, or messy items for daily snacks. This avoids spilling on school devices, furniture, and carpet. Often, we have to eat a quick snack while working. These snacks work better in the lunchroom. Thank you for your understanding.

Birthdays

We love to celebrate birthdays! For students who would like to celebrate birthdays in our class, please bring in non-food items, such as pencils instead of cupcakes. Sometimes parents put together little gift bags. These are just ideas. There is no obligation to send anything!

Math:  Unit 1 Family Support Video

In this section, students revisit the ideas of area and factors from grade 3 and encounter the concept of multiples. They begin by building rectangles given specific side lengths and identifying possible areas when only one side length is known. Students use tiles and diagrams to develop their understanding before learning new terminology.

Next, students build rectangles given a specific area. They see that the side lengths of the rectangles represent the factor pairs of the given area value. Students also observe the commutative property of multiplication when they see that rectangles with the same pair of side lengths have the same area, regardless of their orientation.
